Challenge
As a first step towards Frydenbø’s digital journey, they started two initial projects: the “Dyno engine brake” and the “Engine performance”. Even though Frydenbø’s assets had their own control system displaying live data, there was no way of accessing or storing that data through a cloud-based solution. Frydenbø´s DNV approved engine brake is an essential product for safely testing engines on the rescue boats in the offshore industry without engaging the propeller. This technology is valuable because operating the propeller during testing can be both dangerous and time-consuming, especially since rescue boats must be lowered into the water before proper tests can be carried out. To accurately assess the condition of the engine, Frydenbø required two key elements: access to historical data to monitor engine performance over time, and a digital solution to verify if the engine’s performance was staying within acceptable parameters.
Engine Performance: some engines maintained by Frydenbø were experiencing performance issues, to get to the root cause, both the client and Frydenbø wanted access to the data. Without remote access to engine data and historical performance records, identifying and resolving these issues was challenging and time-consuming. Additionally, Frydenbø sees an opportunity to give their customers access to their R&D and collected data from the current integrations, such as Dyno Engine Brakes and Engines, as well as potential future integrations, such as Dual Drive Hybrid system, NOx After Treatment system and Power Cube. By using the data from their own engines and brakes, Frydenbø can help customers optimize similar equipment. This requires a platform that could not only handle Frydenbø’s internal needs but also provide external users with valuable insights.

Solution
Working closely with Frydenbø, we provided a cloud-based solution that allowed them to gather, store, digitally check and finally analyze data from their current integrations. This system brought all of the data into one place, where it could be accessed in real time and stored for long-term analysis. We provided a clear, visual dashboard that displayed key information like engine RPM, pressure levels, and running hours, so Frydenbø’s engineers could compare past and present performance, making it easier to spot any issues or inefficiencies.
The tailored solution also included automated alerts that notified users if something went wrong. For example, if a certain threshold was exceeded, Frydenbø is allowed to perform quick action. Through the Forward Digital Hub, Frydenbø made the historical data on engine and brake performance available to their customers, helping them better understand their own assets.
Operational views provide office personnel with a ‘digital twin’ representation, mirroring the real-time perspectives and data accessible to field operators.
Result
For Frydenbø, the new system will assist in streamlining their operations by getting access to the historical data that is stored on the cloud. This enabled quick identification of issues, by understanding the factors contributing to engine failures, assisting in extending engine life and reliability. Engineers can run tests, view results in real time, and dive into historical data to understand how their assets perform in the long run. This solution has enhanced product development and is expected to reduce downtime by enabling more proactive maintenance. We established connections to engines on various vessels, including those operated by Frydenbø’s customers like TGS and the Red Cross vessels.
We collected data such as location, speed, engine parameters, and running hours, as well as created dashboards to visualize engine performance data, enabling Frydenbø to identify patterns and anomalies in engine behavior. For Frydenbø’s customers, the Frydenbø Forward Digital Hub is a powerful tool. By accessing historical data from Frydenbø’s own products, customers can make better decisions about their own engines and equipment. Whether it’s figuring out why one engine runs longer than another or identifying patterns in equipment failure, the hub gives users the data they need to keep their assets running smoothly.
